Popular Destinations - This page should provide you with additional information if you're travelling somewhere new in Wales - and should be especially useful for visitors. The page is only a rough guide - for full details of any rail or bus services you need to use our Journey Planner.

Big Pit

Rail: the nearest train station is Pontypool and New Inn from where you need to catch bus number 30 from the main road

Bus: number 30 (operated by Stagecoach in South Wales) from Newport Bus Station, goes to the Big Pit every two hours, Monday - Saturday - takes approximately 1 hour

Bodnant Gardens Rail: the nearest railway station is Llandudno Junction from where you can catch the bus to Bodnant Gardens.

Bus: Service number 25 (operated by Arriva Cymru) operates to Bodnant Gardens from Llandudno or Llandudno Junction (at least hourly on Mondays to Saturdays and 3 times a day on Sundays).

Brecon Beacons

Rail: There are two railway stations that offer good access into the Brecon Beacons National Park, Merthyr Tydfil (rail connection from Cardiff ) and Abergavenny (rail connection from Newport). Venture further into the park via connecting buses.

Bus: Service X43 (operated by Sixty Sixty Coaches) takes you from Cardiff to Brecon town centre (four journeys - Monday -Saturdays and one journey - Sundays)

Beacons Bus: In the summer, the Beacons Bus network runs throughout the Beacons on summer Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from all over South Wales. Services are numbered B1 to B13 and services run from the May Bank Holiday to September.  Check our timetable page between these dates for information.

Bristol International Airport

To get to Bristol airport from South Wales, the easiest way is a train to Bristol Temple Meads.

From Bristol Temple Meads station  you can pick up the "Bristol Flyer" Express Coach directly to the airport click here for times and prices.

Bristol Zoo

To get to Bristol zoo from South Wales, the easiest way is a train to Bristol Temple Meads.

From Bristol Temple Meads, you can get a train to Clifton Downs station then a ten minute walk to the zoo, or catch a bus number 8 / 8A from Temple Meads directly to the zoo.

Cardiff International Airport  

Rail: You can get to Cardiff International Airport by rail from Cardiff or Bridgend on the Vale of Glamorgan line to "Rhoose - Cardiff International Airport". A free Airport Shuttle Bus service connects Rhoose Rail Station with the airport, the shuttle journey takes about 7 minutes.

Bus: X91 (operated by Cardiff Bus) - runs quite frequently between Cardiff City Centre and Cardiff International Airport - . The adult single fare is £3.70 and the return is £4.50.

Bus: X45 - (operated by Veolia). Cardiff City Centre to Cardiff Airport - Half hourly, Mon-Sat during the day.

The bus and rail connections between Cardiff and Cardiff airport take between 30 minutes and 45 minutes.

Castell Coch

Rail: The nearest railway station is Taffs Well, which is served by trains on the Cardiff to Pontypridd line. Weekday services from / to Cardiff Central run at 15 minute frequencies for most of the day. Onward travel is by bus or a two km uphill walk from the railway station.

Bus: The nearest bus stop is approx. 1km from the castle in the village of Tongwynlais. It is served by Stagecoach in South Wales service 132 which runs each half hour between Cardiff and Pontypridd/Rhondda Valley. (On Sundays there is a 60-minute frequency on service 132)

Bus: It is also served by IBT and Stagecoach in South Wales service 26 which runs each hour between Cardiff and Blackwood (Mondays - Saturdays), and every 2 hours on a Sunday. There is also a Veolia X5 service which runs hourly (Mondays - Saturdays). Veolia service 26A operates infrequently but stops closer to the castle grounds.

Fishguard

Rail: Two rail services a day stop at Fishguard Harbour - rail services operate from the South Wales main line.

Gower

Rail: The nearest rail station is Swansea rail station - from there you need to catch a bus to the Gower

Bus: There is an extensive bus network operating in the Gower, called the Gower Explorer which connects most parts of the Gower. The route map is available by clicking here.

Greenwood Forest Park

Rail: The nearest rail station is Bangor, where you can catch a bus connection (various services - check journey planner for details).

Bus: All buses passing through Y Felinheli (e.g. 1, 5, 9A and 88 to Caernarfon) can drop you off at the Victoria Hotel, which is a 20 minute walk from the park. In Summer certain journeys on service 72 operate via the park during school holidays. Check journey planner for details.

Holyhead

Rail: There are many direct trains from Chester to Holyhead and also a direct service from Cardiff via Shrewsbury. The rail station in Holyhead connects with the ferry crossings to Ireland.

Inigo Jones

Rail: The nearest train station is Bangor, where you can catch a bus connection (various services - check journey planner for details).

Bus: Services 1 connects Bangor rail station with Inigo Jones. Also, services 1,1A 80 and 80A connect Caernarfon and Porthmadog with Inigo Jones.  Check journey planner for details.

Millennium Stadium

The stadium is a short walk from Cardiff Central Station and Cardiff Bus Station.

Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagans

Bus: You can take Bus service numbers 32 and 320 from Cardiff to the Museum in St Fagans

National Botanic Garden of Wales

Rail: The nearest rail station is in Carmarthen

Bus: Bus number 166 (Carmarthen - Ammanford) stops at the National Botanic Garden (Mondays - Saturdays)

North Wales Borderlands

Bus: Many useful bus links exist throughout the region. Check our journey planner for times from where you are starting your journey and where you would like to visit. 

Clwydian Ranger Network:
On summer Sundays and Bank Holidays
, the Clwydian Ranger network complements the existing bus network. 


Rail: The most convenient stations for connecting bus services into this region are: Wrexham General, Prestatyn and Rhyl.

Snowdonia

Bus: The Snowdon Sherpa Bus network (services S1, S2, S4, S6, S96, S97) links in with the rail and bus network and comes from Llandudno (through Betws y Coed), Porthmadog, Caenarfon, Rhyl and Bangor, (June - October). Service S1 runs every 1/2 hour up and down Llanberis Pass.

Park and Ride:  A ‘park and ride’ service is available from Llanberis and the Nant Peris free car park, to Pen y Pass. The bus runs every 1/2hr during the summer and if you are planning to park at Pen y Pass, this bus is strongly recommended.

Rail: The nearest stations are Bangor and Llandudno junction. There are 6/7 trains a day that link directly with the Sherpa Bus Service.

Techniquest Bus: Service 35, which operates from Cardiff city centre on Monday to Saturday every 30 minutes, will drop you off right outside Techniquest.  Services 1 / 2, 7, 8 also from the city centre, stop a short walk away at Mermaid Quay, with service 8 operating frequently each day.  The BayCar service 6 stops at the Millennium Centre which is about a 10 minute walk away and is the most frequent service from the city centre.  There is also service 89 which operates from Llandough and Penarth everyday to within a 5 minute walk of Techniquest.

Rail: The nearest station is Cardiff Bay and a shuttle service operates regularly between Cardiff Bay and Cardiff Queen Street.  Connections are available from Cardiff Queen Street onto the valleys, Cardiff suburban network and the Vale of Glamorgan.

Liberty Stadium, Swansea

Rail: The nearest station is Swansea (High Street) with frequent rail services serving the station from West Wales, Cardiff and further afield.

Bus: buses from/to Swansea Quadrant Bus Station and Swansea Railway Station to the Stadium:
Services 4, 4A, 120, 122, 125  approximately every 5-10 minutes, daytime Monday to Saturday. Approx every 20 minutes on Sundays.

Park and Ride:  This can be found at Swansea Vale (Home and Away Supporters)
 2000 parking spaces - £5 parking charge.

Wales Millennium Centre

Bus: The Baycar (number 6) runs every 10 minutes which connects Cardiff Bay with Cardiff City Centre (from most major points around the city centre)

Bus: Buses 1 / 2, 7, 8, 35 and 89 also serve the Wales Millennium Centre from other parts of the city

Rail: The nearest rail station is Cardiff Bay. From Cardiff Central Station to Cardiff Bay takes 4 minutes.  It is a short walk from Cardiff Bay train station to the Millennium Centre. Turn right when you come out of the station and walk down Lloyd George Avenue for about 200 yards until you reach the Millennium Centre in front of you.
